My Lord God,
I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself,
And the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this, you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
And you will never leave me to face my perils alone.
Typically, I’m not one to question what God is doing in my life. However, for the first time I had a moment where I couldn’t understand why God would put me through such circumstances when the only outcome I could see was going to end in pain.
But that’s just it, I was limiting myself to this one possible outcome and missing the bigger picture. Who knows, this outcome that seems to be approaching might not even come to pass. There’s a really good chance that God has something different in mind than what I can see. God’s ways are better than anything we could plan for ourselves. So a relationship doesn’t work, it hurts but God has a better match for you. So you lose your job, it’s scary but God has a better job for you already lined up.
At the time, we feel the pain and the hurt. We might be angry at God and not be able to understand what He’s doing. But we need to have faith that He is still in control: good times and bad. We need patience because God works on His own time not ours. And despite everything, there is a reason for what God is doing. We might not see the reason until something completely unexpected happens like a job offer from a company that you would never have previously considered. Or maybe losing that one person, brings you closer to another.
However, if we are so closed minded by the fear of a certain outcome, chances are we are going to miss the good that God has planned. So always be open to what God may be doing.
Further, these situations build character. They shape who you are so let God transform you into the person He wants you to become. Let these situations be a chance for growth as a person as well as spiritually.
Just remember: Faith can go a long way!
Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. ~ Psalm 37:4-6
